For Claudia Rodriguez, starting Choco Churros was more than just another business venture. It was a dream she had to fight for even if so many things were bet against her. Today, her brand has become a well-known and beloved favorite across Toronto.

Choco Churros is a business located at 335 Yonge Street, part of the World Food Market north of Yonge-Dundas Square. It’s a shop that many people in the city, and from outside of it, have frequented. Everyday, a queue starts in front of the small black food truck and rarely ever ends. But getting to this point was definitely not easy.

The concept for the business actually started in New York City back in the 1980s. Claudia Rodriguez opened up in Queens, New York City and became a huge success very fast. But after twenty years of running that small family business, Claudia wanted to move to Toronto. But there was the uncertainty of having to bring her business to a new environment and all the questions of having to transfer everything and start from scratch.

But still, in 2004, Rodriguez took that leap of faith and made the move to Toronto. At first, she had to work a part-time job at the airport to keep the cash flow coming. In this season, she also has two teenage daughters with what Claudia likes to call “expensive taste” to raise. That moment on, she knew she had to put more effort and time into Choco Churros.

Re-starting the business seemed an impossible city for an unfamiliar ground. She had to maintain two jobs while also running the business. “I started with some line of credit and a trailer,” she recalls. “Now it’s like, ‘Oh my god, I can see what I’ve been doing for 10 years.”

Nearly 20 years later, Rodriguez is finally getting a strong momentum. Choco Churros gets visitors and customers by the droves every single day. Even with the COVID-19 pandemic, the business has now bounced back and grown rapidly over the past few years. Today, Claudia is planning on her second food truck and will most likely even be applying for a license on a third location even before number two opens up.
